Product SME is dedicated to understanding and presenting a structured view of science and art of product management, program management, business & tech Domains. SME in business parlance generally stands for ‘subject matter expert’. But I am no expert for 2 reasons – one, in spite of years of experience in this field, it continues to teach me everyday and second, to avoid complacency or over confidence which can limit my curiosity to learn. So what does the ‘E’ stands for in Product SME – it stands for enthusiast. So I consider myself as a subject matter enthusiast, someone who is perennially curious and a perennial student of the above stated subject.
The blog covers structured views on following areas which has been part of my professional journey over past 2 decades:
- Product Management: Dive into the strategies behind creating and managing successful products, from ideation to launch and beyond. I have always felt that product management is an area which is closest to experiencing on what it feels like being a CEO. This is because its impact can fundamentally impact every function in a corporation and pays rich dividends if one is able to develop the 360 view in the success of the product. And this is one aspects excites me as well as it provides endless opportunities to learn and grow. When developing a product – you would have think about innovation, ideas, market viability, competitive analysis, funding, regulatory aspect, profitability, and list goes on. There is so much to learn that it always keeps you on your toes and keeps you humble.
- Program Management: Learn how to execute complex initiatives efficiently, manage stakeholders, and drive results. The thrill of executing a large scale program is something that can be experienced by being part of a transformational program. I have had the opportunity of leading, managing and being part of many programs. A structured approach to a program execution is critical but key enabling factors which makes the difference between success or failure of program are discipline, persistence and transparency.
- Technical Insights: Stay updated on the latest developments in the tech world, from AI and blockchain to cybersecurity and software development. I consider myself as a technologist. I have always felt that understanding technology behind a solution is very important when building a product or delivering a program. Even if one is not a developer, understanding and keeping an open mind about technology is essential for professional and organisational success.
- Business Domain: Explore the intricacies of strategic planning, market analysis, leadership, and management. This also includes having clarity about the business, business goals and the product the organisation is involved in. The more one knows about the business, better the chances of success. I have always made it a point that, to the extent possible, I understand the business I work in. As a result I ensure to spend a lot of time to learn about the business, about its key offering, how does the business earn revenue, what are the cost involved, who are its vendors and clients and its USP. Business also encompasses the leadership and management lessons which impacts every aspects of professional growth and excellence
The journey looks really exciting and hopefully fulfilling as I embark on this voyage through the ever-evolving landscapes of Product, Program, Tech, and Business
